Mapping Mountainbike Features

Wow! That’s a big fish!

Now, who would approach this user?
He’s in Tapuz, and AFAIK doesn’t use gpsies.
These days he’s celebrating his 300th trip.

talkat.

He maintains many of his GPS recordings (at least those from the last years) in GPX format.
See here at trips from 2008 onwards.

Here’s a message from SeptAA
“אני עסוק יותר מדי ברכיבות ופיתוח הבלוג
אה, יש גם עבודה ומשפחה…
תרגיש חופשי להעלות את המסלולים שלי”

Ok, fair enough.
I thought it was a matter of a checkbox in gpsies.

In any case, he OK’s the use of his gps tracks, so I guess it’s good enough.

FYI: it is a matter of clicking a button in GPSies to upload the track to OSM, one doesn’t even need to be registered with OSM.

It’s not possible to do that in batch mode and the option is (quite trivialy) availble only to the user owning the track.

Yes, he’d have to open all his old uploads and press the lil’ button.
In any case, one can download (maybe batch-download with a macro on your PC) all his GPX files to your PC and upload them to OSM.

No need for him to do all this extra work for OSM.
We can “invest” in a script, which could be used for future users who’d agree to donate their tracks to OSM.

For now, I would be happy if all his future tracks will be uploaded with the click of the button, as part of uploading the new track to gpsies.

Two improvements FYI

  1. the opencyclemap renderer improved significantly lately
    a) it is now hosted in a faster server (slowish but not abysmally so)
    b) it now refreshes changes within hours, not weeks
    c) it renders altitude contours below see level

  2. Potlatch now allows creating a regional MTB trail as a relation. You can check out the Ezuz singletrack I added the other day. I think we should convert existing KKL MTB trails to this kind of a relation.

Your thoughts?

Our standard says that every marked trail should be represented as a relation.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Israel#Main_conventions

What do you mean ‘existing KKL MTB trails’?

Currently we have the following ways marked as route=mtb which are not relations:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/42183694
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/42271857
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/76355667
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/132208763
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/76355669

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/127604701
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/85251622
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/87296716

and two relations:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1797095
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1557840

I mean routes designated for MTB, most but not all are maintained by KKL
We don’t have all of them, but several are included in regional bicycle routes.
I don’t have the technical know-how to list them all but these come to mind:

סינגל רעים
סינגל בארי
סינגל גברעם
סינגל חלוקים
סינגל ירוחם
סינגל קנים
סינגל עדולם
סינגל חרובית
ס’ חרובית-עגור
ס’ עינב
ס’ עגור הדרומי
סובב פארק קנדה
סובב בן שמן האדום
K20
K21
סינגל אימבה (הרכסים)

there are more up north but I’m less familiar with them

KKL lists it’s own MTB routes here:

http://www.kkl.org.il/kkl/hebrew/nosim_ikaryim/letayelkkl/medavshim%20bayaar/

They are easily recognizable in blue when you look at the opencyclemap israel-wide map.

We have a list (probably somewhat outdated) of cycling routes here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IsraelTrails#Cycling_Routes

Are you saying that all these should be route=mtb and not route=bicycle?

For instance, Gvaram Single (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1373988) and Beeri Single (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/1393012) should be tagged the same.

I believe so. They are definitely non-accessible to road bikes.

Seems logical to me.

So all MTB marked routes will be tagged as follows:

route=mtb
network= (no value)
operator=kkl (what are other possible values? RTG?)

Agreed?

Agreed.
There are very few by RTG (e.g bokek - not yet on OSM)
Some were marked by private bodies such as Ezuz and Arkov by Geofun
