Me hiciste movilizar un montón de gente en la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ja ja! Si no lo saben ellos no sé quién entonces. Igual todavía no tengo una respuesta definitiva. Aquí lo que va hasta ahora

Hi, my name is Marcelo, I’m a collaborator with OpenStreetMap (OSM) from Argentina.
I’ve downloaded your data from http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/shorelines/data/gshhg/latest/ and wondered why you include both the Rio de la Plata shoreline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_de_la_plata) and the Lagoa dos Patos shoreline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagoa_dos_Patos) in the boundary between land and ocean.
Is that correct? I’ve noticed that the Rio de la Plata shoreline is not considered a coastline in the OSM map. I need more information on this topic to make a case to include it.
As for the Lagoa dos Patos shoreline, it is included in the OSM coastline, but some argue that it shouldn’t be included.
I hope you can help me on this matter.
Best regards,
Marcelo Rodríguez Claude

Hi Marcelo,
My apologies for the delay in responding.
The GSHHG coastline is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel (cc’d here). He would probably be better equipped to answer your question.
Kind regards,
Jennifer

Hi Marcelo-
I don’t think any conscious decision was made - it is how the data in WVS was organized and perhaps what it looked like in the 1970-80s when WVS was assembled. Over the years we have made changes to GSHHG especially in areas of estuaries where there are changes over time. For instance, we had to completely redo parts of the river mouths of the Amazon and the Nile for those reasons. I’m cc-in your countryman Eduardo Suarez for his opinion on this issue.
Cheers, Paul
