With What Software Do I Begin?

I wish to use OSM to make maps for my own use.   OSM develops via the input from everyone, I believe but I'm a raw beginner and it's too early for me to pretend to be able to upload data for any such thing.
So I make the point that I just want to 'play' and learn.
On a desktop.
With Windows 10.
What I will be doing mainly is plotting bush walking trails I  know of.
Could anyone advise me on which software would perhaps best suit me. Preferably Open Source but I could spare a few dollar if it were worth it.  Though I'd rather put dollars into supporting Open Source.

Did you read https://www.openstreetmap.org/welcome?
You just have to decide what editor you want to use. I think they are all Open Source. The online editor iD might be easier for starters, the java Editor JOSM is more powerful.
