[Bolt] Road Network Improvements

Hi everyone,

I’m Murad from Bolt.

We are going to start improving the road network of Poland. Project details can be found here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Organised_Editing/Activites/Bolt. We would like to get familiar with local mapping guidelines if there are any.

Please, let me know if you have questions.

Waiting for your reply.

Regards,
Murad from Bolt Map Production

Hello and welcome!
Please explain what this means “improving the road network of Poland” (tagging, geometry?) and what tools you want to use?

First of all please look at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Pl:Znakowanie_dr%C3%B3g_w_Polsce
Caveat/commentary (to the workflow you posted here): In general main roads (highway=secondary and above: primary, motorway, trunk) can be a contentious topic in Poland - do not change their class without a discussion on this forum, or somebody will probably revert changes.
Other than that - some roads especially on the countryside are wrongly tagged as highway=track just because they’re unpaved (it’s tagging for the renderer). We slowly try to tackle this issue, but it’ll be a huge task and not entirely feasible without local knowledge.

If you see any streets with missing addresses, then it’s better to ask here for an import from the official database.

My questions:

  • how many people do you plan to employ for editing Poland? (Edit - From the Wiki, recently added: total 23 accounts for the whole world, so this puts a cap on the number).
  • will they be Bolt employees or external contractors? From where? (Edit - from all the members listed above only Jakub sounds possibly Polish)
  • will the above people be long-term assigned to Poland (they can also map other countries simultaneously, doesn’t matter) so they can learn Polish OSM specifics, or will you get whoever is available at the moment?
  • as per previous post, what will be your typical editing cases?

To sum up, if you’re not sure about something, just ask here. The forum is actively read and for simple issues you’ll get a response in a few hours. There’s no excuse for not asking

Hi there,

Thank you for your response.

We use GPS traces (private and non-downloadable) generated by our drivers to improve the road network. For now, improvements include missing roads, one-way tags, road access, turn restrictions. The process includes detecting possible missing road candidates based on the GPS data we have → review the candidates using publicly available sources (such as OSC and Mapillary) → editing the map if the candidate is valid (same goes for one-way tags, road access and turn restrictions). Since we operate in Poland, we reach to the local Bolt team when there’s a doubt, and they provide with ground data in such cases.

Mappers are Bolt employees located in multiple countries. The number of people that are going to edit Poland can change and each mapper would get familiar with Polish OSM specifics before starting to map.

The main tool for editing is JOSM, and we use internal private tasking managers to organize the work.

We will consider all your suggestions and information provided. Thanks for that!

Thanks - I’ve seen you make a single change, a turn restriction in Wrocław, by Bolt005. Seems OK.

Oh, and can I ask you to do something which would be nice? On OSMCha (change monitoring tool by Mapbox) you can create an organized mapping team to indicate to OSMCha reviewers which of edits are Bolt edits.

Images above don’t load, but the description should suffice.

Thanks for this suggestion, I’m already working on it!

Quite the contrary, very suspicious edit, not matching Mapillary source: https://www.mapillary.com/map/im/GSZX8VF5Xk4OkG-B9MkBFQ

Hey everyone,

Thanks for bringing this up. I will talk to the mapper as well. Please expect changeset comments being addressed in 3 days max (considering weekends or/and day offs)

My apology for this. Please be sure, this kind of issues are rather exceptions than a pattern.

Murad

This was a different edit from the one I spotted.
