https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/50087469#map=15/38.6739/21.3537

As I have done for aitolos, individual exceptions to the default provincial road rule of highway=secondary can be considered. If accepted, use note=* to explain the situation and reduce future confusion. Due to personal health issues, you may see me less often in the forum.

so according to this https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dtrack, roads within a residential area cannot be tracks, if a car doesnt fit could be paths.

Also highway=unclassified was originally created to map british rural streets below tertiary but local country conventions can apply. I believe it has been decided how to use them in Greece (paved/unpaved roads of lower importance than tertiary, serving industrial, agricultural areas etc) and use track wherever is not suitable for normal cars.

Of course all these lower importance road tags could be better organized (too many different kinds can be confusing) but i think it could take a lot of time for a new proposal to be approved.

it looks like some people only participate in this forum just to argue all the time, and have their way imposed

yeah this brief block was the result of your complains from 2 months ago, it takes them so much time, all this has been resolved…btw @nikospag i have reported you too because of your mass edits resulting in duplicate EO names everywhere.

Does anybody have anything to say about actual mapping, please?

@Rick Sanchez C-137
Are you totally idiot? Who gave you the right to remove int_name keys from the map? like this https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/784579484/history?

I am still watching you, and i please DWG to do something about you. Woodpecker you did all this mess because you didn’t pay a proper attention to my report in the first place. Now i will have to report both of you. Rick Sanchez C-137 you will be reported again.

oh boy, you have some issues dude…i thought the consensus was against transliteration since its done automatically by renderers

There are so many incorrectly mapped roads (especially unpaved labelled as tertiary or secondary), whole villages are not mapped at all, english/russian/mk names instead of greek ones, residential roads with names in capital letters…and the only thing you care is reporting me for no reason, while others do whatever they like and you dont say anything, who made you the ruler of openstreetmap?Where exactly is the moderator to maintain some order, your attitude is unacceptable

Let’s please continue the discussion with more respect for each other (nikospag will be able to participate again from Friday).

Anyone on this? Should Rick have left “int_names” as they were, bacause they are displayed on road signs maybe?

I think that int_name=* and name:xx=* should be equally valid. The former seems to be common in countries that use non-Latin scripts.

I change my vote to support using name:xx=* by default, and use int_name=* only where there is an internationally recognized name that doesn’t match name:en=*. It was a silly slip-up of mine probably because I tried too hard to not make the situation worse, sorry.

So, the most roads in a residential place should be tagged as highway=residential independently of their standards?
If we clarify this, will be very imporntant. (I agree with the most things that you suggested about minor roads)

τα λέει ξεκάθαρα στο wiki, residential ανεξάρτητα ποιότητας, το ξέρω είναι λίγο παραπλανητικό αλλά θεωρείται tag for the renderer

Woodpeck i don’t forget. https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?pid=752304#p752304:

so my idea about road classes is this:
National Highways=trunk/primary
Major Provincial Roads (connecting towns at least)=secondary
Minor Provincial Roads=tertiary
Minor rural roads=unclassified (asphalt or good quality ground, safe for normal cars), the rest could be track

*residential streets need to be residential no matter the surface (this is the osm way)
*nobody questioned transliteration standards, nikospag copy-paste text does not prove anything regarding the whole int_name discussion

Rick Sanchez C-137 is almost correct.

Whether National Roads are “highway=trunk” or “highway=primary” depends on whether they are part of the main E-road network (Class A only).

I would keep things simple and make Provincial Roads “highway=secondary” by default, and other roads to towns, villages or hamlets should be at least “highway=tertiary”, depending on how important it is.

It is tempting to downgrade roads for not being asphalt/concrete, but I would resist the temptation, and use surface=* and smoothness=* to provide detailed surface information.

I would downgrade such roads if motor vehicles cannot legally use it (like in Hydra), or the surface is so poor that motor vehicles cannot use it for at least 3 months per year (e.g. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/794828975)). In such cases, we need to use note=* to explain why, to avoid confusion in the future.

I would also be careful not to overuse highway=track: we do not need to pave every local road with asphalt/concrete, even if we had all the money in the world. jimkats recently express concern about Kaart members overusing highway=track outside cities.

I think that trying to make the classification system dependent on the surface has made the debate more complicated than it should be, especially with the availability of surface=* and smoothness=*.
