Where are Sidewalk Tags Located?

Hi I’m a newbie to OSM and just downloaded regional data from Geofabrik, but there are no specific shapefiles called Sidewalks. I looked on the OSM wiki and it seems it could be in roads under fclass == footway, but when I filtered for footway and mapped it on ArcGIS it didn’t seem to cover the area I was looking for. Is there somewhere else I should be looking to find the sidewalk tags?

An example will help to help you.

Best are some screenhots (create snapshot, upload to a pic hoster, link as IMG)

Short summary:

  • Not all sidewalks are tagged in osm
  • sidewalks can be lines on his own
  • sidewalks can be part oft the main highway line

So, I am able to see the tags in the iD editor, but when I download the maps data from geofabrik and open the table in arcGIS, I cannot see any tags. Is there a way to download the OSM data with tags?

Geofabrik offer many different sorts of downloads. Normal OSM data downloads have all the normal tags in them. Here’s an example in OSM data: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/141535957 and (as an example to show how it is used) https://map.atownsend.org.uk/maps/map/map.html#zoom=17&lat=53.283632&lon=-1.40101 is a rendering that shows that that road has a sidewalk as far as the farm. The server you’re looking at was loaded with data from http://download.geofabrik.de/europe/british-isles-latest.osm.pbf a couple of days ago.

What are you actually downloading from Geofabrik and what are you loading into Arcgis?

I am downloading oregon data as a shapefile from http://download.geofabrik.de/north-america/us/oregon.html. Then I am loading the roads category shapefile into ArcGIS Pro. However, there are no sidewalk tags. Are you saying that downloading .osm files may have those tags?

sorry forgot to quote see above

Yes, the .osm files have all of the tags included. I don’t usually use the .shp files, but I believe those have most of the tags stripped out.

(just to provide a couple of examples) an Overpass query that searches for sidewalk tags on roads is https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/KN4 . That finds quite a lot in Portland itself, such as https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/150843653 .

An Overpass query that searches for sidewalks mapped separately is https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/KN5 . That also finds quite a lot, such as https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/688083094 .

Look at the PDF-document from Geofabrik, which describes the content of their free shapefiles. In the list of attributes for roads, they do not mention the sidewalk-tag.
OTOH they do contain highway=footway.
