Waste basket + Ashtray tagging concerns

Hello! I started tagging waste baskets in my town, and I noticed three kinds of waste baskets:

  1. Trash waste baskets
  2. Trash waste baskets, combined with an ashtray
  3. Pure Ashtrays. Standing or attached to a pillar.

Examples of these waste baskets: https://photos.app.goo.gl/sJjuw2o8a9R1ReqaA

How am I supposed to tag these? Like this?

1: amenity=waste_basket, waste=trash
2: amenity=waste_basket, waste=trash;cigarettes, ashtray=yes
3: amenity=waste_basket, waste=cigarettes, ashtray=yes

I don’t really like the multiple waste values. It seems redundant to have waste=cigarettes, when there’s an extra ashtray key.

Hi Carsten, and welcome to the forum!

Personally, I probably wouldn’t tag an ashtray by itself as a waste_basket – that seems too much like a trolltag. This may warrant its own top-level tag instead. (amenity=ashtray?)

It’s true that a waste=cigarettes key has been documented on the wiki, but I wouldn’t treat it as the sole “official” solution solely because of that. It’s essentially just what one user put there: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key%3Awaste&type=revision&diff=1335397&oldid=1275768 I’m not aware of any wider discussions about this.

Hey Tordanik! I don’t think the tag is too wrong. It could be better, sure, but I basically just want guidance and start a discussion so we can end up changing the wikis. That way, people can tag the ashtray combinations correctly!

For now, I’m going to tag it like I described, we can automatically change all tags with ashtray later, right?

In theory, it’s quite easy to automatically change tags once there’s a consensus to do so. The hard part is actually getting people to agree which tags should be used, of course.

And yes, I agree with your original point that it feels somewhat redundant.
