I have never known the proper course of action in JOSM to select the particular node I require at an unglued intersection of ways, say. I have done it more by good luck, usually. I thought it was to do with Ctrl, perhaps. I should be grateful if someone would enlighten me.
I believe I have found the answer: unglue the ways, select the way whose node is to be moved, select the node again and move it?
Yes, that works for me.

I’ve have the same problem
Select the way and the (shared) node and unglue (G).
You can also repeatedly click the middle mouse button to cycle through overlaying elements. Or middle-klick once then hold Ctrl-button and left-klick on the needed element in the list.
