OSM with aerial imagery as background not possible in Flanders ?

I mean, a 2D combination ; aerial and OSM together, for ALL to see.

but ‘zoomable’ and possibility to ‘fade’ the aerial or OSM layer at will, like in JOSM.

This is probably possible for other countries in the world as well. But it is a matter of finding people willing to create such a map.
I also think this should not be done on the main osm.org website, as it is not a Google maps clone, but mainly a tool for mappers.

Would be a major publicity though, because ;

  • many “small self-employed” people don’t want to map, but only want to put their “label” on a map
  • many people would “look up their homestead” in aerial view,and the additional info from OSM (speedlimit etc. in vicinity) would make it more attractive
  • etc.

It’s just a simple OpenStreetMap road map overlayed on the AGIV picture. if anyone has a transparent OSM style lying around, I can make a pretier version. In Mapbox Studio anyone can build a personalised OSM map using live data. It takes only very basic coding skills to integrate this into a Leaflet map. Someone smarter than me could probably add a fading bar, if needed at all. I personally like switching background maps more.

It would be nice to build this worldwide, but then you would either need to use a free global imagery provider. Which made me realize Mapbox actually has an OSM-on-imagery style lying around. I couldn’t find it right away, but I’ll try to add it here if you don’t find it first.

Again, would take someone with more skills to actually use that data. But an interesting project.

I’m not quite sure I agree on the added value from a such project.

From my experience, where openstreetmap map shines (and perhaps this is unintentional) is not ‘the road lines’, but everything around them.
Combining merely it’s lines with aerial photography seems to ‘take away’ more from the OSM data then ‘adding to it’.

There is value however in using the aerial photography as a base layer for those helping to put into into OSM. Both the iD editor helps here, as there’s AGIV (‘Informatie Vlaanderen’ now, still not used to the term) photography available through WMS and within license.
