openMvD:
Martin, Dick, Commodoortje,

Marcel.

@Peewee32 :

Well we do know that they credit OSM, and we also know that they use OSM data in South Korea, at least according to:
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/5ptg4q/openstreetmap_data_attributed_in_0532_at_least/
Anything beyond that is just guesswork, I think.

Thanks Andy, very informative.
With permissions I’ll post your pm here:
Thanks for writing to the DWG.
I wonder how the situation is in other countries?
The answer for first-world countries in which kids have smartphones is “pretty much the same as in .nl” I think, though the .nl community has been more proactive than most in trying to deal with it (for which the DWG are very grateful). The Netherlands is also “more mapped than most” (in terms of landuse, thanks to 3dshapes et al) so there’s more opportunity for new people to break stuff.
if you could contact Niantic Labs to inform them about this situation
I think that this would achieve, as an old boss of mine used to say, “three quarters of fourth fifths of f*ck all”, i.e. not a lot. We know with Ingress (Niantic’s previous game) they were very cagey about game data (and it’s easy to understand why - saying in detail how things work makes it easy to cheat, and a lack of knowledge about it creates lots of talk about the game). Feel free to try and contact them, but I suspect you’ll be wasting your breath.
I’d actually be very surprised if Niantic were keeping their game “spawning grounds” up to date based on OSM data. Stories such as http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/07/where-did-pokemon-go-get-its-map/490799/ suggest some of the game data is quite old, and no-one’s found a “smoking gun” yet - somewhere new on OSM, and not on other online maps, that can clearly be linked to a place in the game. In the case of Apple’s use of OSM people were able to find that within hours . Also keeping a map up to date is hard compared to just dealing with one set of imported and processed data (I know that from experience). As an aside we do know that South Korea’s game map is OSM-based, but that’s different to the “spawning grounds”. They do credit OSM for that in South Korea (see https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/5ptg4q/openstreetmap_data_attributed_in_0532_at_least/ , which explains some of the reasoning).
I suspect that the huge “tide” of people trying to cheat in Pokemon Go by adding fake things to OSM will die down in a few days (a new Pokemon Game “Pokemon Duel” was released this week, so I guess the cool kids will be playing that soon). However OSM’s licence means that it’ll always be attractive to companies looking for geographical game data, so I’m sure that Pokemon Go won’t be the last game to use OSM data (if indeed it does).
Best regards

Ingress by Niantic Inc., Copyright 2016

Allegedly at least some “Ingress places” (I don’t know the technical term) were re-used for Pokemon Go.
