Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED

Just downloaded ‘_macosx.zip = Installer for Garmin BaseCamp/RoadTrip (Mac OSX)’ from <http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl> and found when uncompressed the zip file, the resulting .gmap file was a folder in Mac OS X, so can’t be installed in Basecamp.

You have to use mapinstall for the Mac to install the gmap folder. If that does not work you can install it with GMTK from Javawa, http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

Hi Folks
I could really use a hand. I have been using these maps for quite some time, but recently went to a new PC and had to reload all my software. I am using Mapsource v6.16.3 and have just downloaded a requested map file. It has loaded nicely and I have changed the name using JaVaWa … the files also open in Mapsource no problem.
However … I am getting NO map details. At all.

In fact … in the bottom right hand screen … about the map scale, it shows “Basic Map only”
Any help would be appreciated …

Maybe press Ctrl-G?

blush THANK YOU!
I have a funny feeling I just did something simple that I was missing. I should came here days ago.
THANK YOU!
Now I have to ask … what is that command?

See menu View → Basic map only = Ctrl-G
This is a handy command for clearing map cache, just press Ctrl-G twice.

I feel rather stupid … I guess maybe I should dig deeper into MS … and learn to ask for help earlier.
Again thanks … our trip to Amsterdam and Scotland will be MUCH better.

I have done several days worth of work uploading GPX tracks and digitizing dirt roads used by our cycling group in Atyrau Kazakhstan. I had used the KZ maps on my gps previously and it worked great. Now I need to know when the tracks I have created would show up in a build from that region?

Cheers,

Once you have drawn those ways in OSM. The uploaded tracks will never show up.

Why not? They seem to be correctly tagged and show up on the standard rendering.

I was referring to cactoliths uploaded traces. Of course the highways that are drawn from these traces are rendered on the garmin map as soon a new build is made. The uploaded GPX tracks are not rendered; I understood that this was his question. Sorry for the confusion if the last mentioned “track” was not the same as the uploaded GPS track.

Sorry for any confusion. I know the terminology here can be very specific and slight variation in terms can mean wildly different things to different people.

Let me ask another way… The dirt roads I added via editing OSM (by following my uploaded GPX files) show up correctly on OSM and on Strava where I upload many of my rides. When I download a copy of the Astrakan RU tile on garmin..nl the files do not include any of the new features I added or edited. I also cannot see them on the mobile Strava app tied to OSM. Should I be able to see them immediately after they are on OSM? Is there a lag time? Is there a regular build date when the adds and edits all get incorporated?

Thanks again for any insight on this.

Cheers,

cactolith

The osm map makers and providers have different update procedures.

From my understanding of the message above, you downloaded a Garmin suitable map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ for a Russian location, Astrakan.
The date of the map data from this site, is listed at the right side just below the blue tiled map and as I write this it says “Slippy map and Garmin maps are based on OpenStreetMap data. Map version: 01-06-2016”. Although I don’t know how often it is updated, I would think an update is due any day now.

The update schedule was not apparent to me on checking the Strava site and may depend if you are a premium subscriber or otherwise.
You may in your question, be only referring to updating the Astrakan RU tile on the Strava app?

I was checking the http://extract.bbbike.org/ yesterday and noticed that it’s maps are based on data from the 10 June http://download.bbbike.org/osm/planet/ so one of their garmin maps may suit you needs this time.

The OSM web site map https://www.openstreetmap.org normally updates quite soon, though you may have to refresh you browser to see the latest tiles, especially the Standard and Humanitarian layers. The Cycle layer updates about once a week I think. The routing is often on a slow update cycle for a few sites.

I was able to extract an area using http://extract.bbbike.org/ that now shows the unpaved roads and other features I added over the past month. The responses back were very helpful!

I will keep looking for the .nl site to update their tile as they quality there is a bit higher.

When I was travelling in Europe a few months back I noticed my Garmin device with official maps was showing speed limits on all major highways and several minor ways as well. While using OSM maps on the same device (South America) I don’t get the same indication, even where I know speed limits are added. Is there a symbol that is not processed correctly, is it something forgotten/omitted in the style, or is this something mkgmap is not possible to do?

AFAIK is a limitation of the map format, because speed limit is only available in NT format, which mkgmap isn’t able to handle because the format hasn’t been reverse engeneereed yet.

Thanks for the suggestion. Managed to find a solution through MapInstall by manually selecting the un-zipped folder. What’s different these days is that the unzipped file as downloaded from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl is no longer in a .gmap package file that one can just double click and start the install process. I unzipped an old download and it would appear there’s a change on Mac’s system side as that old zip file also got turned into a folder than a .gmap package file.

There’s definitely a work around at present but there’s also a change to the unzip process. Just reporting in.

Thanks muralito, understand that it is mkgmap limitations for now, hope the format can be reverse engineered so this feature becomes available to us, I found it quite useful on the highways.

I think this needs to happen again. I’m not receiving the second email. I’ve tried on a half dozen different email providers over the past 3 hours and I’ve gotten nowhere! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

i didn’t get the second mail, although the request url indicated, that the request has been finished.

Below the map, the message

sfs4.pleiades.uni-wuppertal.de/garmin/, queue = 2 requests (~0 days), status = Disk full

could show the problem?
