Tamil UNICODE rendering
I have come across some # tags when there in Tamil UNICODE name for the place say for Example http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3519934703 which is School Tamil UNICODE name is யா/புங்குடுதீவு ஸ்ரீ கணேசா மகா வித்தியாலயம் which is rendered in Garmin Openstreet map (In the map source) as Yaaa/Panug#Kattutaivau Sa#Rai Kaneecaa Makaa Vaita#Taiyaaalayam Is there a way to display the English Name only or any other alternative suggetions for the name. I prefer to maintain both the English and Tamil names.

Garmin Openstreet map (In the map source)
Did you create your own map or did you download the map from somewhere (if so, please provide a link).
Maps are typically created with Latin1 character set, and if a name in a foreign alphabet is encountered, some transcription process is done, and it does not cope well with Indian alphabets. There are options for using the name of a different language (if that is present).
When I look at the node you describe above, the things look even more strange: the name tag is in English in Latin alphabet, and that should be used. Perhaps the option for the languages of the tags was set such that int_name is prefered over name.
By the way, I don't think that int_name is the correct tag for the Tamil name, rather name:tm (not sure with the language abbreviation for Tamil).

Re: Tamil UNICODE rendering
The order in which maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl are generated is name:en, int_name, name
So that means the int_name (I agree with Bernhard it's tagged incorrect) in Tamil is converted into Latin and then you get this rubbish.
So this would be more correct (I suppose that Tamil is the official language in that area)
int_name=J/Punguduthivu Sri Ganesha Maha Vidyalayam
name=யா/புங்குடுதீவு ஸ்ரீ கணேசா மகா வித்தியாலயம்int_name=name:ta யா/புங்குடுதீவு ஸ்ரீ கணேசா மகா வித்தியாலயம் is still incorrect tagging
If Tamil is not the official language, I would suggest this tagging:
name=J/Punguduthivu Sri Ganesha Maha Vidyalayam
name:ta=யா/புங்குடுதீவு ஸ்ரீ கணேசா மகா வித்தியாலயம்Offline

Re: Tamil UNICODE rendering
Sadly, the page on mapping in Sri Lanka http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka does not tell us about the "name" conventions for Sri Lanka. In India with its many languages, the English name is used in the "name" tag, and the regional name is put into e.g. "name:ta". See for an example node https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/314626472. Looks to me that Sri Lankans use the same convention.
Hence you should change "int_name" to "name:ta" (i.e. the second version suggested by ligfietser), and after a few days download a newer version of the map - it should be correct then (i.e. displaying the English name).

Re: Tamil UNICODE rendering
Dear All,
Thanks for the promptly reply.
I have downloaded the map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
I made some changes as mentioned here via https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?edit … 25/79.8421 if this is changes are correct for the Garmin GPS I can go ahead fix some other problem there.
Tamil (my mother tongue) and Sinhala are official languages here in Sri Lanka. English is much regonised language (2nd language me and most of the Sri Lankans)

Re: Tamil UNICODE rendering
alt_name = :ta is not correct
It is either name:ta = or alt_name =
