Hi,

Primary and secondary roads can have dual carriageways as well.

There are many European cities that have dual carriageways which do not qualify for motorroad or equivalent status. In Greece, dual carriageways do not automatically mean that it is a Motorroad or Motorway. It depends on whether there is a confirmation sign or general consensus within members of the community (including, but not limited to, you). The general consensus at the moment is that the trunk roads go to motor-roads, which are not actually widespread.

If we start making every section dual carriageway a trunk road then we would wrongly give prominence to roads that not many motorists use, which may mess up with the routing. We have the list of roads, but we also have to use common sense.

i didnt make all avenues green, only the ones with 2 lanes or more per side
everywhere there is an avenue like this there is a lot of traffic involved

they are usually entrances in major cities so they are important (your example Μυρμιδόνων/Σαρίμβεη connects larisa with karditsa so i think it qualifies

i m open to discussion, if i m wrong i have no problem to revert the roads back to primary

Hi,

We have a lot of roads with 2 lanes or more per side in Athens, but not all of them qualify as a motorroad: EΠ8 Alexandra Avenue has 2 lanes plus a bus lane per side, but it doesn’t qualify for trunk status, because it is a regional road. Another example is the ΠΕΟ 8 Iera Odos, which is not as important as the nearby EO8 Athinon Avenue.

I’ve done a lot of research into this: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Provincial_roads_in_Greece

Can we find any info about the roads in the area of Kavala?

i know about provincial roads (if national road network is confused just imagine with provincial)
and how an urban highway can be a provincial road i dont know
its ok to give extra information but there is not a single sign for provincial roads and no one ever heard of them
i think is wrong making them orange (most of them connect minor villages)

In my original opinion, I preferred sticking to one type of highway for each class of road, which was:

Motorway = Motorways
Trunk = National Roads on the European Road Network
Primary = Other National Roads
Secondary = Provincial Roads
Tertiary = Other roads to villages and settlements.

Regarding road conditions, there is a reason why surface=* and smoothness=* tags are there for.

The issue is about the Greek naming.
“Πρωτεύων” -“Δευτερεύων” and all the rest must be replaced in Greek with names that we find on the map and signs.
So, I guess, there will be no conflict about naming, you know about what is Λεωφόρος or not and so on!
That’s why I suggest real naming .
I made some suggestions on the OpenStreetmap database.

If I recall correctly, we leave out “Odos” and “Leoforos” out of street names. Sometimes the prefixes go to the name:prefix=* tag although it is not official.

You, personally. find it right to leave out these words?
If someone will search for a street name, how will he know the result of the search is ‘odos’ or ‘leoforos’?
In Greek region there might be many streets with same name. You may find ‘Athinon’ even as odos or leoforos.

Odos are named almost all streets, but leoforos only a few.
At the image the left is odos and the right is leoforos. Why shouldnt write leoforos next to the name?
Because 1 person decided so?

I did not make that decision. See https://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=16282

@ika-chan!
There is also an isue about the categories of the roads in Greek language.
The current names do not represent the real “value” of the priority.
My suggestions are the following:

  3. trunk (red) = Εθνική οδός/Οδικός άξονας (NOT Λεωφόρος, see: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=trunk#International_equivalence
    https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Greece#Road_Network )

The difference between δρόμος and οδός is that usually οδός has name, δρόμος can’t necessary have name.

Map-Finder.

nikospag

Map-Finder,

It is very clear to me that you are only here to anger the community by making such widespread changes to the classification structure and naming scheme, without general consensus. We are not impressed by that and we would prefer that you do not make widespread changes unilaterally: I know it can be slow but it is the only way to avoid edit wars.

Most of us are only trying to improve the map by adding the missing roads, so that Greece becomes one of the least unmapped countries.

The established consensus is that we do not add “οδός” and “λεωφόρος” directly to street names (among others).

Side note: there is a user called Δημήτρης Μπαλτουμάς who is downgrading all the village roads to dirt roads, despite that fact that according to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Greece, tertiary represents roads connecting villages. Note that we have surface=* and smoothness=* to answer concerns about road types not reflecting the current condition. Is anyone okay for me to elaborate on the two tags in our WikiProject page?

@ika-chan!

I changed no classification. I just suggest.
I try to build openstreetmap wiki in Greek language and I have read exactly the characteristics of each classification translating english to greek.
So do not blame me. I know exactly any classification that’s why i made all those suggestions.
for instance, do you know what “Χωματόδρομος” means? It means that the road’s surface that is ground, dirt etc. “Χώμα” means dirt. “Αγροτική διαδρομή” means the road that has vehicle tracks on it, exactly the meaning of tracks.
I guess that’s why Δημήτρης Μπαλτουμάς confused track roads with any other that its surface is dirt.
THAT’S WHY I INSIST ON GIVING NEW NAMES TO CLASSIFICATION!

Using your last example about this guy, you are proving the necessity of updating the classification!

@ika-chan!
As you see none is interesting to make things simple and better.
If i make a suggestion and I have to wait over a month for a response, you call it anger…
