when is a "city" a city?

Surprisingly, I am having a hard time finding the answer to this.

So, Is there a standard in OSM for what qualifies as a city, town, village, etc?
Is it by population?
is it by official city boundry?

Also, this might be handy for some people:

Re: when is a "city" a city?

I entered "City" in the wiki's search box and got this:
Key:place

# place=city - Population 100.000 and over
# place=town - Population between 10.000 and 100.000
# place=village - Population below 10.000
# place=hamlet - Population below 1.000

Re: when is a "city" a city?

thanks,

so my home "city" is being a bit over ambitious...

population is approx 10,000    just barely makes the rank of Town.

lol

Yes, many cities in America and Canada will struggle to make the grade. OSM still has some anglocentric definitions. smile

That said 10,000 is low by world standards.
