Export osm Data For Use On GPS

Go easy on me i’m new to this so will probably ask daft questions.
Ive got a garmin handheld gps and i’m trying to export osm data so i can then
compile it into an img file using a utility such as cgpsmapper. Am i barking up the
wrong tree ? If i select an area in the map window the option to export as xml data isnt
available, am i doing something wrong ?

I don’t know where you are located, but Garmin maps are already exported for a wide range of countries. This link will also point you to some interesting Garmin/OSM related reading.

Hi werchipper,

If you really need the XML data, zoom in to, at least, level
11 and the option will be available.

Hi all,

Was recently in Rome and wanted a map of the town on my GPS Garmin etrex Vista HCx. I followed the procedure which is explained here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OSM_Map_On_Garmin with JOSM, mkgmap and sendmap20. This worked well for me. Remember to use with mkgmap the GMAPSUPP option. I had the excellent map of the centre of Rome on my GPS.

I have yet to make it possible to show this map in Mapsource as well.

Thanks to all folks who made this possible.
