bulgarian name of a street

Hi,
I speak only german/english and need some help with bulgarian street names. I tried to add the name “Христо Смирненски” to a street http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/61992742 (My hotel last week was located in this street). Do I have to add “ул.” at the beginning the name, as I have seen on other bulgarian streets (eg. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/61992734)?
Regards Andreas

So, that is the question :slight_smile:
Street names in Germany look like “Sommerstraße”, supposing “straße” is the German word for “street”.
You do not write

name=Sommer

but

name=Sommerstraße

Similar naming convention could be observed in the UK and other countries.
Russia: name = улица Ширяева as per their recommendations.

In Bulgarian language “street” is also “улица”, which could be shortened to “ул.”.
Some mappers include that abbreviation in the street names, some - not, just for simplicity.
Yes, we know about abbreviations in names.

Btw for the hotel tags one is sure: addr:city=Sandanski should be addr:city=Сандански, since the official name of the city is in Bulgarian language,
and addr:street=Христо Смирненски (also in Bulgarian language, Cyrillic, not Latin)

Hi plamen,
thank you for your help. Now I understand the meaning of “ул.” :slight_smile:
I fixed the streetname and the hotel address http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/15629623. If you want you can check whether the tagging is correct now.

Hello Andreas,

Thanks for your interest in mapping in Bulgaria. Our commnity is currently quite small, but we are growing. Any outside help is very welcome.

Your question is very relevant, because until recently it was not raised at all and there was no guideline on what is the exact naming scheme for streets. There are printed maps in Bulgarian that use it either with or without. That is why, currently the map contains many different formats entered by different users. The question was finaly raised a few months ago and we had a relatively (for our community size) lively discussion on the need to set a standard. Here it is in Bulgarian forum thread: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=19819.

The thing is, a few options would be correct, or not really wrong. But we just need to agree on a single one of them. The consensus (more or less) is that in the future for streets “ул.” should be left out and only for boulevards the abbreviation “бул.“ in front should be used to make them identifiable. Based on this, there is an entry in the Wiki-project Bulgaria (Bulgarian only again):
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/%D0%A3%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82_%D0%91%D1%8A%D0%BB%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%8F#.D0.98.D0.BC.D0.B5.D0.BD.D0.B0_.D0.BD.D0.B0_.D1.83.D0.BB.D0.B8.D1.86.D0.B8_.D0.B8_.D0.B1.D1.83.D0.BB.D0.B5.D0.B2.D0.B0.D1.80.D0.B4.D0.B8

In other words, the prefered notation would be:

A user also proposed to have a bot that would clean up street names from “ул.“, „улица“, quotation marks, etc. in the future.

As I said, “ул. Христо Смирненски“ is definitely not wrong from a lingual point of view and is used in some maps, but the „ул.“ is by no means required like in German where you cannot say or write „Sonnen“ instead of „Sonnenstr.” Just in order to keep with the new convention I will probably edit your entry.

Feel free to ask any other questions, or to comment. It is also helpful for us!

Hi BollWeevil,

thank you for your information. If the bulgarian consensus is a streetname without “ул.”, “улица” this would be OK for me. So I removed “ул.” on the street http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/61992742 and some streets near of it http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/15630702.

Thanks to you and plamen.

Regards Andreas
