Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED

Do you mean this issue is not specifically related anymore to the Mapnik typ file? It could be an mkgmap issue (all those osm maps are compiled with mkgmap), so I suggest you can post it on the mkgmap mailing list:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mkgmap-dev@lists.mkgmap.org.uk/info.html

It doesn’t appear to be the TYP file. I’ll post over on the mkgmap list when I get a chance. I’ll give your TYP file a run later today. Thanks.

Cheers,

Looks good. The map was recognized on my Montana 650 as a Country map and the country name as searchable (once I figured out the language) as were City names. I gave up on Address search since I don’t speak Dutch.

The zoom level at which the World Basemap is taken over by your map could be a bit lower. The map also does not show up in BaseCamp when the Montana is connected .

Cheers,

Thanks for testing drtbyk, glad to hear this one is ok. This map does not show in Basecamp because I have compiled it with Mapsource (at the moment when I made it, mkgmap couldnt generate a working address index, but recent developments will make this work too and will make it show up in Basecamp).

I’m downloading maps from the osm website for some time now with my desktop, which runs on Windows XP. The system works without any trouble at all, uploading maps on my gps device perfectly. Building your own maps is just thrilling. So far so good.
I recently bought a netbook which runs on Windows 7 (starter ed.). Initially I simply used the maps from my desktop, but noticed that parts of the maps wouldn’t build up properly. leaving open whole parts, specially when I scrolled rather fast.
So I decided to download the maps with my netbook, but then the results were even worse.
What could I do?

Hello,

We’ve downloaded the OSM-maps of New Zealand (by selecting New Zealand of manual selection), we’ve installed the maps on the pc. When we zoom in in mapsource, we can only see a small part of New Zealand. There seems to be a vertical line that hides/covers the rest of the islands. Is this a known problem? We’ve never had this problem before with other countries.

Kinds regards
Wim

I have found the way to sove the problem I had. If anyone has the same problem, the explanation below would help.

The problem was that the e-mail server of my use discards the url address which is normaly located between ‘before it’s deleted.’ and ‘Enjoy!’.

If it happens, then use an e-mail address of a different e-mail server for the notification mail, i.e., at the e-mail address box on the Map Request screen.

Lamburtus:

When will the next refresh of data take place on http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/, I am going to Cuba next week and I would like to be able to have an updated map to take with me, I have made a number of updates to the area around Trinidad that would be helpful to have when I travel there.

Thanks

Bruce

Hi just new here but found the routeable UAE map excellent. I have been using ground truth to compile my own but this is not routeable. I have also used ground truth to generate a contour only map of the UAE which works great. I can use the same map with or without the contours showing so now have on road and offload maps in one device. Cool, many thanks.

One thing that might be worth doing if it’s not possible to host the contours for the world… Is to indicate the map bounds so enabling a way to generate contours to match the map.

Also reducing the elevation resolution decreases the size of the contour map quite a lot. So I only show 100m contours which works great here as there are large areas of land which are fairly flat and other areas that are quite mountainous.

In any case I recomend looking at groundtruth to generate your contours to overlay on the osm map

A new update is started tomorrow (Friday) evening CET and should finish uploading somewhere early morning on Sunday. I hope this is in time for you. If not, then I only have one tip to offer: start mapping earlier next time

To all who sent emails etc over Christmas and New Year: I’m slowly recovering from a nasty double cold/infection and I’m hopelessly running behind in answering emails. Please be patient a bit longer.

Is this just some kind of sick joke? Per Instructions: There is NO ‘ENABLE TILE SELECTION’ window, There is no ‘email’ window…Shift selection doesn’t highlight
anything… Do you work for Garmin maps?

Lambertus:

Thanks, that actually works perfect for me, I leave for Cuba on Wednesday morning. I will keep your suggestion in mind, and will make any additional updates to the data as soon as I return.

Thanks for the tip. Had a look round and will keep the tips in mind. One question. The contour maps I have been generating to overlay, work pretty well, but do you know if there is an option to make them unselectable on the garmin? Also despite trying several methods to change the colour and thickness of the lines the contours come out as medium thick black lines. Any idea how to change them? They were created using groundtruth using the following

Groundtruth -ibf=output.ibf -mn=Uaecontours -fn=Uaecontours -cr={Have tried several rules files}

Then I combine the tiles into one img file with gmaptool and copy to the maps directory on the nuvi garmin.

  1. Overlay maps are unselectable on certain Garmin devices and not on others. On my GPSMap76Csx they are unselectable if compiled with a different family ID. I’m not sure that there is a definitive list of which models they work on but my vague recollection is that it’s easier to unselect on older models than on newer models.

  2. I don’t use Groundtruth to make contours so I can’t answer with any exactness, but the way your contours are displayed depends on a) the GPS unit you use b) its firmware c) any TYP file that is also incoporated

I use srtm2osm to create OSM-format contours, then convert these to Garmin IMG format using mkgmap and combine them with my TYP file which has custom definitions for contour lines. More details on the contour-creation side here: http://www.cferrero.net/maps/mkgmap_tiddlywiki.html#contours

Is the system broken at the moment (8/1/12)? I did a custom map of all UK and Ireland and the download was smaller than previous. Also many of the tiles seemed to be blank. I note that the date now being reported below the map window (which doesn’t load) is dated 23/12/2012, yes 2012! Something wrong somewhere.

Hello; I loaded a map (Thank You) onto my Garmin Oregon, but it’s much smaller than the area I selected? I did
this twice with the same result?

Is there a limit to the map size that is different from the memory card size? How do you select a larger area?
The whole U.S. for example or even a region (SW USA)…?

Second; even though I loaded the two maps onto a single SD card, only one showed up on the Garmin. Is
there a way for combine the multiple maps? Thank You again… mdg

mdg,
IIRC the maximum number of tiles is around 2500.
The maximum memory for vector maps is 4GB (All of OpenStreetMap for the US should fit, but if you are adding topo you will probably run out of space), although you can add raster maps and Birdseye imagery well beyond this.
If you are using BaseCamp or MapSource to load IMG files to your OR they both send a file named gmapsupp.img. It will overwrite the existing file of the same name. The workaround is to rename the gmapsupp.img file replacing gmapsupp with a useful mnemonic. Keep the IMG extension. Send as many maps as will fit in the 4MB limit.

Yes, the upload broke down because my router hung and needed a reboot. Somehow the upload did manage to update the version number so that the website thinks that there is a new version available.

Anyway, all the missing tiles have been uploaded now and the new version is available. It’s using the latest Mkgmap r2162 which should create a proper address index in the gmapsupp image directly. So with this new version you can have a proper address search function on the GPS without having to use Mapsource to generate the gmapsupp.

Lambertus, I suppose you forgot to update the style files to r2162?
This is important because in the older mkgmap versions was a bug introduced where villages got a garmin type that couldnt be found in the place search. (They got Garmin type 0x1100, which is now corrected to type 0x900). In your latest map they are still rendered with 0x1100.
