Placement of village Node

Namaste dear Friends!
Often we have the problem where to put the node with tag:
place=village

Let´s discuss following situations of unknown villages:

1. we have linear buildings structures along the street.
I would say, we use the middle of such structure, node placed on the street or near the street.

2. Scattered buildings. Mostly in mountains.
I would say, try to find a kind of place, which is mostly also the sport and recreation place near of school:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4774105156

3. Bigger areas with some streets.Mostly in south Nepal: No city, more likely VDC.
I would say, try to find a kind of most important crossing and put the node there. Example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/47741 … 1/84.77196

4. In cases, where we know a real centre of the village, of course we put the node at this position.

Suva bihani!
Marek

Hi,

"1. we have linear buildings structures along the street.

I know we have placed nodes on streets before but should it not be posted on the line as then the node would be part of the line geometry. Usually, I have avoided node placed on the street for neighbourhoods in the cities unless they are chowks then used the intersection=junction tag to name such places.

Re: Placement of village Node

Regarding the southern plains. I will get in touch with prakashh. He placed markers of approximately 74 villages in the Kailali/Bardiya flood prone areas (example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4742436515). It will be good to know how he chose where to drop the points.

Re: Placement of village Node

Namaste Gaurav,
good idea, ask prakashh!

It would be grat to start an action of mapping of villige / VDC points or names in Nepal.
There is an huge deficiency.

I putted 3 times the name: "Fix my name" on such unknown objects in Nepal. An example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/482975095

But I find hundreds of such objeckt during mapping in Ilam. I don´t wish to devastate the map with more of such entries, you may find villages without names using OSMOSE.

See: http://osmose.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/? … e&fixable=

I would suggest to use also tag: fixme=name: this makes working with keepright easier:

https://www.keepright.at/report_map.php … w_tmpign=1

Re: Placement of village Node

Marek,

Eastern Nepal continues to be an area that is poorly mapped. One reason might be that Kathmandu Living Labs has not done any OSM sensitization trainings in this part of the country. 'ayushupreti22' is a mapper who frequently maps eastern Nepal. I will try and get him to take a look at the unknown objects you mentioned.
Another problem with places like Illam is the high cloud cover maybe this problem has been resolved with the new batch of imagery released by Bing.
Thank you for sharing the osmose link looks like it will be a valuable resource to keep OSM Nepal accurate.

Cheers!
