There are two different objects with place names at the munipality/village/city level (skipping some edge cases here for now):

  • municipalities

  • actual places

Naturally in some cases both are the same entity.

In any case only for the former there are official names published by the BfS and typically thea are the only entities that have an appended canton designation. It should however be noted that these are not only the official names they are also what is signposted.

The canonical solution is:

  • add the official name as it is (potentially with the appended canton) to the municipality border. This should already be the case for all of them, but one never knows.

  • add the place node as admin_centre to the boundary relation of the municipality with the node name set to the name without the canton, add official_name to that node with the full official name.

This works without issues and covers both local and official usage (and works with nominatim for example).

Against, thanks for your answer. It makes perfect sense to me, and I think it is what we should apply to the country, I’ll still ask to the mailing list to be sure.
