Why is none of the two name finder services on osm.org able to parse coordinate
strings like ‘N 51 23.455 E 007 11.123’ and display the position as marker on
the map ?

The two namefinders on osm.org (the one on the frontpage and gazetteer.osm.org) are in fact the same namefinder. A new namefinder is being developed though…
