Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
@Umapathy: I dont know the Etrex 10 but I think you can enable streetnames or change the zoom level in the settings of your device somehow.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
Officially the eTrex 10 doesn't support maps at all, so I assume it simply isn't capable to display street names.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
I have tried to make some maps for eTrex 10. I had device for a short time and I even haven't noticed missing names. They could clutter the screen anyway. Surprising is that eTrex 10 with detailed maps supports address search, POI search, POI data like address and phone number, marine objects. It would be a nice B&W device if it had more internal memory.

eTrex10 does support maps. Onlything we need to copy the whole content of the GPS to a computer (for backup purposes) then delete file named gmapbmap from the gps. From the mapsource send the required map and rename the map as gmapbmap then it (GPS) loads the map. I think the device only look for a particular filename (gmapbmap) to load the map.

I tried the zoom setting but I wasn't successful. I don't know any setting or any undocumented feature in Garmin eTrex10 GPS to display the streetnames.

Thanks I also seen POI which is nice but would be even great if it displays the street names. I don't mind about B@W screen. Basic display is sufficient enough for me atleast for now with my current earning in Sri Lanka.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
I just wanted to report that I am not getting the windows install option to download.
This are the options that I get:
Free maps for Garmin brand GPS devices
from OpenStreetMap
country: New Brunswick
version: 01-07-2015
Name Size Description
metadata/ -
osm_generic_tiles.zip 46M Compressed file containing the tiles and overview map. This is useful for applications like Qlandkarte and Linux users.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
In Brazil there are two states that have a strange naming convention for federal highways. Currently they appear quite messy on the GPS, and wonder if there would be any chance of making specific rules for these cases?

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
Currently (OSM Generic Routable 09July2015) sri lanka been 3 parts almost all the parts are around 7.5MB. I used to upload GPS traces from time to time via https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Umapathy/traces to fix the road position. Unfortunately with newer download I used to get Out of memory errors even if I clear the old tracks. If you can make Sri Lanka in to 4 or 5 segments it will greatly faciliate to put in to my eTrex10 GPS and I can also contribute with more GPS traces to Sri Lanka. This would be great help for me. Thanks in advance.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
@Umapathy, have you tried popejs maps, http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/maps-garmin-fenix
Or get a better device which is capable of displaying large maps.
@Skippern, isnt that a mapping fault on OSM?

Thanks for the link. I downloaded it and size wise it's great. But it looks like they are not updated often as garmin.openstreetmap.nl. Newer download OSM generic routable (LKA_15-07-2015) seems to be promising as the northern region of Sri Lanka now available with managable size. Ofcourse I prefer to buy a GPS that capable of displaying larger map but I have to wait for some what longer period.

Umapathy, you could also try http://extract.bbbike.org/
With that tool you can define your own polygon and update it whenever you want.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
There does seem to be a problem in our script dealing with multiple ref values:
ref=BR-251;MGC-251;BR-122;MGC-122The fundamental question we need to answer here is "Which of the refs should appear in the highway label?" Since I can't see an easy way to make a decision otherwise I think we can only display the first one.
Regards,
Peter.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
is it somehow possible to generate a compressed map, e.g. lacking POIs, streetnames, ...? Just figured out i can put maps on the edge510, but it has very limited storage.
thanks!

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
Thanks Maxx I understand the problem now. This index search problem is a longer existing mkgmap issue.
Popej just posted a possible fix to deal with this problem on the mkgmap dev list, so maybe this can be solved soon:
http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/multi-wo … l#a5826288
Any update about this problem?
Searching italian streets by name and surname is very troublesome...
Thank you

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
Problem is solved but still has experimental status. Use option --x-split-name-index to get search index with partial street names.

Re: Worldwide routable Garmin maps: URL REMOVED
With this option Mkgmap still can't produce a good search index for the gmapsupp so the problem is only partially solved. Biggest issue is that it cant find any address if you don't enter a place name. Using mapsource or basecamp to produce a gmapsupp.img solves this, but I dont think Lambertus will produce all those maps manually every week.

Maybe the search index can be improved, but at least for names in spanish the maps are more useful if you run mkgmap with that flag than without it.
I don't understand the issue that it can find any address. ¿Could you explain with more detail?
I have been using a map with that option since February and didn't notice the issue. If you need to check, I use the South America map provided by http://www.i-nis.com.ar/osm/garmin

I have tried this on my Oregon 600:
1) Addresses
2) In what country is the address: Argentina
3) In what city: search all
4) Enter street name: A
No results found
This works:
3) Spell City: Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires
4) Enter street name: A
Several street names are found
If you make a version for the pc with mkgmap, and install the maps from Basecamp or Mapsource to your device, the streetindex with 3) In what city: search all works ok.

When I try this on my Zumo 660 it will find only some streets, but not all.
Cheers,
Peter.
