FAQ for map users

Q: I installed the map in MapSource or Basecamp but don’t see anything!
A: Try the following:

  • Make sure you selected the map in the pull-down menu (when a pull-down menu is shown).
  • Clear the map cache by pressing the ctrl G key combination a few times.
  • Mostly the maps cover only a small part of the world and is easilly overlooked. Press the ctrl - key combination (control key together with minus key).

Q: I installed a second map from garmin.openstreetmap.nl in MapSource/BaseCamp/RoadTrip and don’t see the first map anymore:
A: The maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl use a single product ID so installing a second map overwrites the first map. Solution: download the application JaVaWa GMTK and use that to change the product ID of the first map before installing the second map (click on the flag on the top of the page for other languages, like English).

Q: _windows.exe installer for Garmin BaseCamp/MapSource (Windows) missing?

A: The selected tiles exceed the 2 Gb limit that the installer (created by nsis) can handle. You can notice this in the left panel, the text with size of selected tiles will turn from green to orange.

If there is no windows installer supplied, you will still be able to install the maps, by using the _macosx.zip = Installer for Garmin BaseCamp/RoadTrip (Mac OSX)
Unzip it and place the .gmap folder to the default Garmin map folder. The location of this folder depends on the Windows version.
In Vista or W7 this is: C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps or C:\Users{user}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Maps (please note this is a hidden folder!)
Windows XP: c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\garmin\maps

Or you can use http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html to install the gmap maps.

Map distorted?

Maps that span a large area are often distorted; this is clearly visible at the north and south bounds of the map in both MapSource and BaseCamp. In Mapsource simply press Ctrl-Alt-A to correct this. With JaVaWa GMTK you can select another center point for the projection angle to correct it in Basecamp (if Mapsource is not installed).

**Route not aligned with the roads? **

Calibrate the screen (Basecamp) View - Align North Up or key Ctrl+N

Single country sets have a unique Family ID now, so this makes installing of several mapsets possible.
Custom mapsets still have the same ID (2000) so the workaround with JaVaWa GMTK is still needed until further notice

Hi, please forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere but how often is the garmin map from garmin.openstreemap.nl updated?

Thanks!

Since there is no fixed schedule I would guess it is once a month or so.

I’ve got problem X with the Garmin download, can this be fixed?

Unfortunately the website garmin.openstreetmap.nl is not stable and hardly maintained.

For alternatives please go to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download
