Help for Nepal

Dear Friends from Russia, please help with mapping of Nepal. This small country is experiencing the national traghody. I was 2 months before there. What I saw - often poor, but very proud and nice people: and the OSM mapper group in Nepal was small but well organized. Now, after this terrible earthquake there is no food, no water, very seldom elekticity, and no help. But the mappers do still their job. We need there very detailed map. Mapping of every singular houses are important. I m vey sad, I love this friendly, quiet people and invite you to visit Nepal. And I know, in Nepal there is NOBODY who would ask after help. So I ask your soul for help. Please, help collect information and save human lives.

This looks like a job for HOT (humanitarian OSM team). Have you tried contacting them?

I spoke on the telephone with the friends of Nepal. The building of Kathmandu Living Labs is severely damaged. They work outdoors. There is no electricity in the city, but they have solar collectors and can coordinate mapping. Their problem is: no food and the water is going to end.

But lot of mappers do good job: http://osm.townsendjennings.com/nepal/

Thanks a lot for your help!
Marek

Edit: New satellite images for Nepal:

New Images comes tomorrow. The weather should be better…

I got this information from Nepal:

Hello All,

Just to give you updates from the field. Kathmandu Living Labs team have assembled in a situation room. We are beginning to establish contact with response agencies. We are already in touch with Nepal Redcross.

Here are the high priority areas for your help with mapping after discussing here in the group.

  1. Outskirts of Kathmandu Valley (https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4583125#map=13/27.7179/85.3337). Please focus on north, east and north-east of the valley.
  2. Lamjung District : ( https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4588153 )
  3. The major residential area in this district is Besisahar ( https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=12/28.2271/84.3777 )
  4. Nuwakot District : https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4583250
  5. Gorkha District: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=27.9996&mlon=84.6235#map=14/27.9997/84.6235
  6. https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4583249#map=10/28.0041/84.9490

We would like the following objects to be focused: road network, buildings, open space (for helicopter landing).

Please create tasks in tasking manager accordingly.

We will send you more requests and guidelines as things evolve.

We make very generalized map in mountains. The most important is probably to know, where are buildings.
For the pilots of helicopters are 100m not of great significance…

How to use DigitalGlobe tiles in JOSM ?

I asked german mappers. No answer till now… Maybe we should ask directly the data provider?
We need it tommorrow, when we get images of better quality. We can do with better images the most important thing: Mapping of destroyed houses in Kathmandu.

I can not try on my tablet PC now :frowning:

DG: https://www.mapbox.com/blog/nepal-earthquake-imagery/

https://services.digitalglobe.com/mapservice/wmsaccess?CONNECTID=<ConnectID>&SERVICE=WMS

https://services.digitalglobe.com/mapservice/wmsaccess?SERVICE=WMS&CONNECTID=3be28e3d-4e5a-4d61-8d25-51996e44b761&FORMAT=image/jpeg&VERSION=1.1.1&SERVICE=WMS&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=DigitalGlobe:Imagery&STYLES=&SRS={proj}&WIDTH={width}&HEIGHT={height}&BBOX={bbox}
