planet.com with it’s satelites will provide satteiite images for every point of the planet each day, and will provide this for the public. I think it would be great if this would be displayed as a sattelite layer in osm.org. Even better if you could go back in time (with a little time slider).
OSM is about the map and only the map. It’s not google maps. It’s entirely free but OSM doesn’t get money for ads, unlike Google. Buying a worldwide satellite imagery is very, very expensive and far beyond the capacities of an open source/data project like OSM. Today, we are allowed to use Bing imagery but this is only for tracing into OSM, not something to show to end users.
