Please forgive me if this post is a little off topic as it relates to Ordnance Survey Open Data as opposed to OSM. Nevertheless, I hope it is of interest to Garmin users.
I’ve created some code that takes OS Open Data maps, calibrates them, and turns them into kmz overlay maps suitable for use as custom maps in Garmin GPS receivers or in Google earth. I now have kmz’s covering the whole of Great Britain for OS Street View, OS Vector Map District (using the OS raster files), and 1:250k colour raster.
An example file can be downloaded from http://42jon.imail.org.uk/tq38sw.kmz. Note this data contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2013, and is made available subject to the OS Open Data Licence at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/docs/licences/os-opendata-licence.pdf
This file can be used in Google Earth and has been tested as a custom map in an etrex 20.
I am happy to make the files for the whole of Great Britain available for download. However, the files total almost 17GB in size. If they prove popular, I won’t be able to afford the bandwidth charges of hosting them (yes, there are plenty of “unlimited” web hosts, but read the T’s & C’s, and you’ll find that this sort of use isn’t allowed).
I’ll also make the code available under an open source licence, but I need to make spend some time tidying it up and making it a little more user friendly before releasing it.
If anyone’s willing or able to host the kmz files, could you let me know. It would also be useful to understand the level of interest in these files and/or the code to do the conversions.
